Biography

Birgit Mörtl is an internationally recognised and award-winning artist and designer. Her artistic focus lies in the areas of body art, in particular special effects in connection with fashion design as well as airbrush, painting, art, installation, costumes, sculptures, decoration, set design, equipment and photography.

Due to the permanent symbiosis of the most diverse artistic and technical disciplines, her works and pieces cannot be clearly categorised. But it is precisely this diversity and her preference for metamorphosis and experimentation with a wide variety of materials that her customers love and that characterises her creations.

Now based in the Weinviertel region, she is not only a two-time master tailor for stage and theatre tailoring, but also a multiple world champion (4x) and vice world champion in various body painting categories and winner of prestigious awards such as the Golden Mask and the Vienna Fashion and Lifestyle Award. She was also nominated for Best Set Design in a Fashion Short Film in Los Angeles in 2019. Due to this recognised expertise, she has been active as a juror and teacher worldwide for many years.

Since 1996, her work has been exhibited in Austria, Italy, Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Venezuela, South Africa, Equatorial Guinea, China, Great Britain and the USA and has been published in various national and international magazines as well as art and body painting books.

In addition to the design of various television programmes, music videos, films, shows and theatres in German-speaking countries, her creative work has also been in increasing demand worldwide for years. From weddings of Indian billionaires and shows for the Saudi royal family to New York Fashion Week and shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London. As part of the Eurovision Song Contest, she has created costumes and set designs for various artists on several occasions.

For 20 years, she was enthusiastically involved in Europes largest HIV charity event, the Life Ball in Vienna. Together with her creative team, she was responsible for body painting, hair, make-up and sometimes also for the costumes for the opening show, leading a team of up to 100 artists. In the course of this event, she worked for Versace, Gaultier, Missoni, Diesel, Vivienne Westwood, Roberto Cavalli and Pierre et Gilles, among others.

In all her works, it is clear that she sees each creation as a challenge to create something completely new by using innovative methods and materials. Her art is a reflection of her own experiences and dreams, but also an invitation for others to explore their own inner worlds and engage with the universal themes of life. It is a journey through the unknown, a fusion of reality and fantasy, expressing emotions and revealing the beauty in the invisible.
